NATIONAL STAY OUT OF THE SUN DAY

Friday, July 3, 2026

National Stay Out of the Sun Day arrives every July 3, urging us to take a break from the sun’s intense rays. Whether you’re lounging indoors with a good book or relaxing in the shade, this day is a perfect reminder to prioritize skin health. Embrace the opportunity to unwind, hydrate, and protect your skin from potential damage.

Despite the fact that your epidermis is constantly regenerating, it’s important to protect your body against ailments like dry skin, sunburn, and skin cancer. The best way to prevent these conditions from occurring is by staying out of the sun. There’s no such thing as a healthy tan — any time spent in the sun, even if you lack a sunburn to show for it, can ultimately damage your skin.

The single leading cause of premature skin aging is extended exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. If you want to keep the wrinkles at bay and maintain your youthful appearance as long as you possibly can, avoid spending long periods of time in the sun. If this isn’t possible, make sure you don a broad-spectrum UVB/UVA sunscreen.

There are a hundred and one ways to celebrate summer that don’t involve direct sunlight. You can see a movie, visit a long-lost friend, volunteer at a local animal shelter, grocery shop (hey, some people find this fun), etc. Find something that intrigues you and go for it!

You can stay out of the sun by patronizing local businesses. Did you know that Rancho Mirage has a Shop Local card? This is a digital card that you can load money onto and spend at over 70 different Rancho Mirage businesses. Please click the card or below for more information.

Additional experiences include hanging out at the local indoor shopping mall, bowling, indoor pickleball, visiting the Palm Springs Air Museum, Palm Springs Art Museum (free for BofA customers on first weekend of each month), Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, ice skating at the Berger Foundation Iceplex at the Acrisure Arena, public libraries, matinee performances at any of the local theaters, or an escape room experience, not to mention Joslyn Center's role as a Cooling Center during business hours through October 15th.

END SENIOR HUNGER CAMPAIGN

It's the time of year when Joslyn Center reaches out to our friends and donors to support nutrition service programs for older adults at risk for food insecurity. These programs include the Joslyn Community Food Bank, Morning Bites and other programs throughout the year for our members. Your donation helps ensure that we can continue to fight hunger right here in the Coachella Valley.

The campaign annually takes place at the end of season and helps support these critical services in our community during the hottest months of the year. Please consider a donation of any amount and click below to contribute.
