VISUALLY IMPAIRED PEOPLE DAY

Saturday, June 6, 2026

Visually Impaired People Day is observed annually on June 6 to raise awareness about vision loss, promote inclusion, and advocate for accessibility and support for people with visual impairments. The day was first organized in 1998 by the German Federation of the Blind and Partially Sighted (DBSV), a self-help organization founded in 1912 that represents over visually impaired people and blind individuals. Over the years, it has highlighted issues such as education for the visually impaired, Braille literacy, assistance animal regulations, and development of devices to aid daily tasks.

Per Google AI, Germany has 500,000 to 1.2 million visually impaired residents. In the United States it's between 7 million and 9 million, and globally it's 2.2 billion. There are many ways to observe Visually Impaired People Day. They include educating yourself about vision loss and its impact, advocate for accessibility in your community, share the day on social media, and support organizations that provide assistive technology, education, and advocacy.

Visually Impaired People Day is a reminder that vision loss affects millions, and that awareness, empathy, and action can help create a more inclusive world for all. It brings attention to people with vision impairment or loss and hopes to create supportive ecosystems for them. The day also spreads awareness about the feelings of isolation visually impaired people often struggle with and aims to help others understand and empathize with these people’s struggles.

As we age, visual impairment can become a common issue, impacting our ability to engage in everyday activities and reducing our quality of life. The Joslyn Center is committed to providing inclusive programming that supports the well-being of all older adults, regardless of their abilities.

As part of our dedication to inclusivity, Joslyn Center has partnered with the Braille Institute to offer specialized programs for visually impaired older adults. These programs are designed to promote social interaction, enhance skills, and improve physical and mental health. Among the offerings are a Basketry class, a tai chi class, and a low-vision support group.

Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise that improves balance, flexibility, and overall well-being. Our Tai Chi with Mike is adapted for visually impaired individuals, ensuring that everyone can participate and benefit from this ancient practice. The slow, deliberate movements help enhance body awareness and reduce stress, contributing to better physical and mental health.

The Low-Vision Self-Support Peer Group offers a safe space for visually impaired individuals to share experiences, learn from one another, and receive emotional support.

Our Basketry with Hilary provides a tactile and creative outlet for visually impaired individuals to express themselves and develop new skills. Participants learn the art of basketry with yarn, which can be both therapeutic and rewarding, fostering a sense of accomplishment and community.

Braille Support Group for Spanish-Speaking Clients is a group through the Braille Institute led by Gladys Medina, LMFT, from our Wellness Center. The group provides emotional support, social connection, and a safe space for Spanish-speaking individuals experiencing vision loss or low vision.

At Joslyn Center, we believe that every older adult deserves the opportunity to lead a fulfilling and engaged life. Our inclusive programming is designed to cater to the diverse needs of our community, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and supported. Whether it’s through creative arts, physical activities, or peer support, Joslyn Center is here for all older adults, regardless of their ability.

END SENIOR HUNGER CAMPAIGN

It's the time of year when Joslyn Center reaches out to our friends and donors to support nutrition service programs for older adults at risk for food insecurity. These programs include the Joslyn Community Food Bank, Morning Bites and other programs throughout the year for our members. Your donation helps ensure that we can continue to fight hunger right here in the Coachella Valley.

The campaign annually takes place at the end of season and helps support these critical services in our community during the hottest months of the year. Please consider a donation of any amount and click below to contribute.
