NATIONAL HAT DAY
Thursday, March 26, 2026
| | |
Get out your favorite hat (we know, sometimes it can be really hard to decide) and celebrate National Hat Day this March 26! The day was created to honor the history, style, and utility of headwear, from top hats to baseball caps. It encourages people to wear their favorite hats, ranging from fashion-forward pieces to functional, protective gear. Hats have been worn as uniforms, fashion accessories, and protective gear. And did you know that they date all the way back to before 3300 BC?
Though there aren’t any official records of hats before 3,000 BC, it is believed that they were commonplace long before that. The 30,000-year-old Venus of Willendorf figurine may depict a woman wearing a woven hat. One of the earliest known confirmed hats was worn by a bronze-aged man nicknamed Otzi, whose body was found frozen in a mountain between Austria and Italy, where he had been since around 3250 BC. He was discovered wearing a bearskin cap with a chinstrap made of several hides stitched together, resembling a Russian fur hat.
In the Middle Ages, hats were a marker of social status and used to single out certain groups. Hats for women ranged from simple scarves to elaborate hennin, and acted as a symbol of social status. Structured hats for women similar to those of male courtiers began to be worn in the late 16th century. In the first half of the 19th century, women wore bonnets that gradually became larger, decorated with ribbons, flowers, feathers, and gauze trims. By the end of the century, many other styles were introduced, such as hats with wide brims and flat crowns, the flower pot and the toque. In the middle of the 1920s, when women began to cut their hair short, they chose hats that hugged their head like a helmet. These were the cloche hats, whose low brim made it so women had to walk with their chins up, creating an air of independence and self-reliance.
These days, you will see people wearing a wide range of hats. Baseball hats, fedoras, driving caps, berets and wide-brimmed sun hats are popular. Since summer seems to have appeared here in the desert a bit early, you may want to don one to protect your scalp and shield your eyes a bit from the sun's rays. Did you know that we have a few Joslyn Center baseball hats available for a $10 donation? Pickleball visors are also available for a $7 donation. just come see Tomm or Alex if you are interested in either of these. No matter what kind of hat you choose to wear to accentuate your sense of style, wear it in confidence and let your personality shine!

Thank you to Palm Desert Greens Country Club for designating Joslyn Center as the beneficiary of this year's Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, March 14th. Special thanks to Lela Anziano, Jonathan Rich, and Lola Breeze for helping to make this happen.
Congratulations to the winning foursome of Bob Harrison, Greg Quaid, and Jimmy & Jimmy Copeland, and to Wayne Breeze on receiving the prestigious Charity Golf Tournament MVP Trophy. This is presented each year to the individual who best exemplifies the spirit of the event. In this case it was for not having played golf in three years and "coming out of retirement" with amazing results such as sinking a 30-foot putt. Tournament proceeds will benefit Joslyn nutrition service programs.

DESERT OASIS HEALTHCARE SPONSORS PICKLEBALL COURTS
RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY
| | |
Thank you to Desert Oasis Healthcare for sponsoring the Pickleball Courts Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony. The long-awaited event finally took place on Wednesday, March 18 with Barbara Rogers doing the honors (above). The Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce was on hand with Chamber members and staff and many pickleball playing members who had contributed to the Pickleball Courts Campaign. Joslyn Center was presented with a Certificate of Recognition for the ribbon cutting from the Chamber, as well as from the California State Assembly, California State Senate and United States Congress. We were honored to receive this official recognition! Attendees took a swing at a champagne bottle piñata, including Marivic Erskine (right), with a load of Joslyn pickleballs pouring out. If you missed picking one up, come and see Tomm.
| |
A short exhibition game was played with Barbara Rogers making the first official serve. Barbara and Joslyn pickleball instructor, Henry Basile, teamed up against Tim Taylor and Joe Calmelat (left). Tim and Joe were no strangers to victory, each having successfully competed in Joslyn Pickleball Club tournaments, and they "took the title" once again.

Thank you to Barbara Rogers and Gary Geske (right) for underwriting the Center Court, shade structure, turf, and forthcoming water fountain. Thank you to Dojo Pollock & Rajeev Pollock for underwriting the East Court in honor of Lindi Biggi, who was present for the ceremony.

| In 1933 a boy discovers an ancient Native American in a sideshow carnival tent. The Indian is Tonto (Johnny Depp), the old companion of John Reid (Armie Hammer), a lawman more famously known as the Lone Ranger. With this opportunity to set the record straight about his and Reid's adventures, Tonto recalls the day in 1869 when he first encountered the man who would be his trusted friend and tells of their teamwork bringing down Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) and other Old West outlaws. | | | |
