Celebrated every third Saturday of September, National Dance Day encourages people of all ages and abilities to experience the physical and emotional benefits of movement. Whether by joining a local class, choreographing a routine, or simply dancing at home, this vibrant observance promotes a healthy and active lifestyle as both an artistic outlet and a form of exercise.
Launched in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe—co-creator of "So You Think You Can Dance" and co-founder of the American Dance Movement—alongside Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, the holiday was established to foster artistic expression and physical fitness. Originally observed in July, the holiday shifted to early fall in 2019 through a partnership with the American Heart Association to align with the academic year for their Kids' Heart Challenge.
Beyond physical improvements like strength, balance, and bone density, dancing provides powerful mental and emotional health benefits. Staying active consistently helps release stress and tension while boosting overall mood, proving that movement is an essential currency for total well-being.
Celebrate National Dance Day at Joslyn by exploring our variety of dance classes, including Tap Dance, Line Dance, and International Folk Dancing (currently on hiatus). Whether you want to master an energetic rhythm or experience traditional movements from around the world, there is a class for everyone to enjoy. We are always looking to expand our community offerings, so if you have a suggestion for a new dance class (or any kind of class), please let Alex know.
