NATIONAL SINGLES DAY

Saturday, September 27, 2025

There’s a bit of conventional wisdom related to National Singles Day, September 27 that says, “A new love finds you when you least expect it; when you’ve stopped looking and you’re on the verge of giving up, that’s when it hits you like a ton of bricks.” We’d like to add, there should be no continuing to “scan” the groups at the places you go, all the while still telling yourself and the universe you don’t expect anything to happen. The point is actually farther from a future romance’s timing and closer to being okay with yourself. Come to think of it, “You’ve got to be alright alone,” is something Americans have also heard many, many times. It’s when you’re comfortable in your own skin that you exude the kind of confidence that attracts.

But don’t get us wrong. We don’t want to dissuade those who feel they’re ready to give love another chance (or that big first shot). According to the U.S. Census Bureau statistics, the number of single adults in our country is growing significantly, almost exponentially, from year to year. It’s not exactly “shooting fish in a barrel” these days, but should you, as an eligible single, decide it’s time, you’ll probably have multiple options to choose from.

In the meantime, take some space and some time and do some reflection. National Singles Day is a 24-hour period where it’s okay to be about “me, me, me,” because you’re doing some important work, fine-tuning who you know you are, who you thought you were before, and where it all fits in, in the grander scheme.

When you take your me-time, take it on Thursdays with the Joslyn Singles. They get together every Thursday at a different restaurant. You will meet new people and enjoy great company over a delicious meal. This is the perfect way to connect with fellow singles in a relaxed and social setting. Each outing is a chance to discover new restaurants, make new friends, and enjoy lively conversation with a welcoming group of like-minded individuals. Don’t stay home alone—step out, socialize, and create new memories with us!

JOSLYN SINGLES TRANSITION

Wanting to be around people, Francie Spears joined Joslyn Center in 2010 after her husband passed away. Eventually the Joslyn Singles Group was created, and Francie was part of that for quite a while. That came to a halt in 2020 when COVID shut everything down. When things eased up, the previous leader didn’t return, and Francie took it over beginning in September of 2021. Since then, she has arranged all of the weekly adventures to restaurants that the group has attended. She has even arranged special parties for the group for various holidays, such as Halloween and Christmas. She has done all of this because she loves fine dining and loves to share that experience with friends.

In June of this year, Francie wanted to go on hiatus for the summer so that she could spend time in Idaho with her sweetheart, Ron. Instead of letting the group stop for a while, John Lauziere stepped in and has been getting all of the restaurants arranged and growing the group for the last few months. Now Francie has decided to pass the leadership to John permanently. And start downsizing a bit. She’s currently looking into relocating to a retirement community in Carlsbad. She’s chosen there so that she will be near her daughter and grandson. She’ll also be spending time with her tuxedo cat, Miss Elizabeth Mittens. Ron will hopefully be joining her in her new community as well. We want to wish Francie a giant THANK YOU for all that she has done for Joslyn Center over the years.

John will now be the Joslyn Singles leader. He joined Joslyn Center in 2013. After attending the Single meals for a while because he wanted to get more active socially and also hated eating out alone, he learned that Francie was looking for someone to take over for the summer, so he decided to step up. John says that there are so many great restaurants to try in the valley. He hopes maintain the group and grow a bit. John will be arranging two luncheons and two dinners each month during winter season.
