NATIONAL BOOK WEEK

Thursday, November 24-28, 2025

National Book Week is celebrated annually from November 24 to November 28, promoting reading and literacy through various activities and events. It is a celebration that encourages reading and literacy among individuals of all ages and is dedicated to celebrating the written word and encouraging people to explore new books and authors. Established by the American Booksellers Association and the American Library Association in 1919, this week-long event aims to promote the joy of reading and the importance of books in our lives. It has since expanded globally, inspiring communities to engage in literary activities and discussions.

The week serves as a reminder of the power of books to transport readers to different worlds, enhance creativity, and foster critical thinking skills. It also highlights the role of libraries and bookstores in promoting literacy and providing access to literature.

National Book Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate literature, promote reading habits, and appreciate the impact of books on our lives. Whether through reading, writing, or participating in community events, everyone is encouraged to engage with the literary world during this special week. To help you have access to a wide variety of books, Joslyn Center has the Palm Desert Library Bookmobile parked in front of the building on the first Wednesday of each month. Even if you don't have a library card, they can take care of that for you. Any of the books that you check out through the Bookmobile, may even be returned to Joslyn instead of going to the Library.

SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK:

GUIDED MEDITATION

Tuesdays, 10:30-11:30am

We know that life can get stressful sometimes, but taking some time to meditate can help reduce your stress level and calm you down. Glendon Geikie, MSW, leads our Guided Meditation on Tuesdays. He's been leading our members in relaxation for about five years. Prior to Joslyn, he used it in his professional practice as a therapist.

Glen first got into meditation by attending a "Freedom to Meditate" class in the 1970s. He has expanded his knowledge in the practice since then. He says that meditation can help you relax and help to relieve stress. Additionally, it will help to lower your blood pressure and reduce any inflammation that you may have.

You don't need to have any experience in meditation to attend here at Joslyn. Glen will guide you through all of the steps. It takes practice to master the craft, but he is here every Tuesday to work with you, help you relax, work with your breathing, and ease the burden that some parts of life can bring.

Another key character, Cameron, who is looking for his father, becomes entangled in the mystery and their lives intersect.
