NATIONAL FOOD DAY
Friday, October 24, 2025

National Food Day falls on October 24 each year. This day, celebrated for the first time in 1975, was created by the Center for Science and Public Interest (CSPI) and was supposed to be similar to Earth Day. The day toasts nutritious and healthy food, and focuses on educating people on healthy eating, good farming methods, and safe food production. It also reminds us of the strides we’ve made in living more healthy lives and growing food in viable, responsible ways.

Goals: The movement aims to improve health and environmental sustainability in the food system by supporting healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food.

Themes: A key theme is "Eat Real," which means cutting back on processed foods and factory-farmed meats in favor of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and sustainably raised protein.

Activities: You can celebrate by attending local events, learning about healthy eating and sustainable farming, or simply by focusing on making more conscious food choices in your daily life.

Joslyn Center's nutrition service programs include the Joslyn Community Food Bank on Friday mornings, Let's Do Lunch in partnership with Jewish Family Service of the Desert twice a month on Wednesdays, and Eisenhower Lunch & Learn once a month in partnership with Eisenhower Health.

Food Bank staff and volunteers collect donations from a wide range of sources such as Albertsons, Local Farms Hidden Harvest, Abound Food Care, FIND Food Bank, and Palm Desert Rotary Club. Our main goal is to help our members be mentally and physically active, but we also want the community to know we are here for them and that is why we opened the Food Bank to the whole community. Food Bank hours are every Friday from 8-10am.

Let's Do Lunch and Eisenhower Lunch & Learn provide enrichment and health education programing along with a mid-day meal three times a month on Wednesdays. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Additional nutritional activities include Morning Bites on Mondays and seasonal member lunches. Coming up before you know it are the Friendsgiving Potluck in November and the Holiday Luncheon in December. Stay tuned!

OCTOBER BOOK CLUB WITH SHARYN

Friday, October 24, 10:30am

In Strangers in Time, bestselling author David Baldacci steps away from high-octane thrillers to deliver a haunting and emotional wartime story. Set during the London Blitz of 1944, the novel follows three strangers—a street-smart orphan, a displaced teen, and a grieving bookseller—who are drawn together in a world shattered by war.

More than just a historical novel, Strangers in Time explores the emotional battlefield of survival, grief, resilience, and found family. It’s a touching story of ordinary lives in extraordinary times, where kindness is revolutionary, and love comes from the unlikeliest places.

NOVEMBER BOOK CLUB WITH SHARYN

Friday, November 28, 10:30am

A brilliant rendering of a scandalous historical figure, Kate Manning's My Notorious Life is an ambitious, thrilling novel introducing Axie Muldoon, a fiery heroine for the ages. Axie's story begins on the streets of 1860s New York. The impoverished child of Irish immigrants, she grows up to become one of the wealthiest and most controversial women of her day.

Inspired by the true history of an infamous female physician who was once called "the Wickedest Woman in New York," My Notorious Life is a mystery, a family saga, a love story, and an exquisitely detailed portrait of nineteenth-century America. Axie Muldoon's inimitable voice brings the past alive, and her story haunts and enlightens the present.
