National Food Day falls on October 24 each year. This day, celebrated for the first time in 1975, was created by the Center for Science and Public Interest (CSPI) and was supposed to be similar to Earth Day. The day toasts nutritious and healthy food, and focuses on educating people on healthy eating, good farming methods, and safe food production. It also reminds us of the strides we’ve made in living more healthy lives and growing food in viable, responsible ways.
Goals: The movement aims to improve health and environmental sustainability in the food system by supporting healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food.
Themes: A key theme is "Eat Real," which means cutting back on processed foods and factory-farmed meats in favor of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and sustainably raised protein.
Activities: You can celebrate by attending local events, learning about healthy eating and sustainable farming, or simply by focusing on making more conscious food choices in your daily life.
Joslyn Center's nutrition service programs include the Joslyn Community Food Bank on Friday mornings, Let's Do Lunch in partnership with Jewish Family Service of the Desert twice a month on Wednesdays, and Eisenhower Lunch & Learn once a month in partnership with Eisenhower Health.
Food Bank staff and volunteers collect donations from a wide range of sources such as Albertsons, Local Farms Hidden Harvest, Abound Food Care, FIND Food Bank, and Palm Desert Rotary Club. Our main goal is to help our members be mentally and physically active, but we also want the community to know we are here for them and that is why we opened the Food Bank to the whole community. Food Bank hours are every Friday from 8-10am.
Let's Do Lunch and Eisenhower Lunch & Learn provide enrichment and health education programing along with a mid-day meal three times a month on Wednesdays. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Additional nutritional activities include Morning Bites on Mondays and seasonal member lunches. Coming up before you know it are the Friendsgiving Potluck in November and the Holiday Luncheon in December. Stay tuned!
