NATIONAL CHOCOLATE DAY

Tuesday, October 28, 2025

National Chocolate Day, on October 28th, recognizes one of the world's favorite tastes. While many specific chocolate-related holidays exist throughout the year, National Chocolate Day celebrates all things chocolate.  Chocolate comes from the seed of the tropical Theobroma cacao tree, growing in Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America. Historians have documented the earliest cultivation of cacao seeds at around 1100 BC.

The intense, bitter taste of cocoa requires the bean to be fermented to develop the flavor. Once fermented, the beans are dried, cleaned, and roasted. After roasting, the shell is removed to produce cacao nibs. The cacao nibs are then ground into cocoa mass, which is pure chocolate in rough form. The cocoa mass is usually liquefied then molded with or without other ingredients. At this point in the process, it is called chocolate liquor. The chocolate liquor may then be processed into two components: cocoa solids and cocoa butter. From there it may be transformed into dark, bittersweet, semisweet, milk, white, or even ruby chocolate.

Joslyn Center will be helping everyone ease into Halloween at the end of the week with chocolate treats on Tuesday. Stop by for a snack bite of your choice!

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS SEMINAR

Wednesday, October 22, 2025

Thank you to Crickett Powell, Mitch Brown and Carla Sullivan-Dilley from the Coachella Valley Disaster Preparedness Network (CVDPN) for joining us on Wednesday, October 22 for a Disaster Preparedness Seminar. Registered guests were treated to lunch and a presentation on what each of us can to do to prepare to meet the challenges of a major disaster. Attendees received a Ready-to-Go bag, first aid kit, and a Vial of Life kit sponsored by The Auen Foundation, and a hand fan sponsored by Southern California Edison.

Mitch is the current President of the CVDPN Board of Directors and was preceded in that role by Carla, and Crickett helped facilitate the event. CVDPN is an all-volunteer organization whose mission is to provide citizens of the Coachella Valley with training, education, and networking opportunities to be prepared for all disasters. CVDPN’s goal is to teach personal and community preparedness with the “No Community Left Behind” all-inclusive training in English and Spanish. They are educators, not first responders, and they proactively support first responders through educational outreach.

A brilliant rendering of a scandalous historical figure, Kate Manning's My Notorious Life is an ambitious, thrilling novel introducing Axie Muldoon, a fiery heroine for the ages. Axie's story begins on the streets of 1860s New York. The impoverished child of Irish immigrants, she grows up to become one of the wealthiest and most controversial women of her day.

Inspired by the true history of an infamous female physician who was once called "the Wickedest Woman in New York," My Notorious Life is a mystery, a family saga, a love story, and an exquisitely detailed portrait of nineteenth-century America. Axie Muldoon's inimitable voice brings the past alive, and her story haunts and enlightens the present.
