EVERYONE WRITES DAY
Saturday, October 21, 2026
| | |
National Everyone Writes Day inspires schools to dedicate October 21 to the power of the written word. This special day encourages every pupil and staff member, from students to catering staff, to engage in playful and engaging writing activities. Join the celebration by picking up a pen, sharing your stories, or exploring new forms of expression.
We have our own group of writers here at Joslyn in the Creative Writing & Memoirs class, led by Linda Hennrick. What began as a group that took summers off has become a year-round gathering as more writers make the desert their permanent home. Each week, members bring samples of their writing to read aloud and share copies so everyone can follow along. There are no writing assignments or in-class writing exercises, but members often inspire one another with new ideas and topics. Feedback is always supportive and constructive, with suggestions to improve writing, punctuation, spelling, and grammar. The goal is to encourage each writer, build confidence, and help everyone grow while enjoying the creativity of others.
The group welcomes a wide variety of writing styles and subjects, including memoir, poetry, fiction, mystery, fantasy, romance, thrillers, adventure, genealogy, history, self-help, educational pieces, humor, songs, children’s stories, essays, and tour guides. As the Joslyn Center Writers, members have published three collections: SandScripts, LifeScripts, and PostScripts. The latter two are available on Amazon. Professional book shepherds are also available to help members publish their own books, and several writers, including Linda, have benefited from their guidance. Above all, the group offers friendship, encouragement, and the opportunity to become a better writer. Members describe it as rewarding, therapeutic, and fun—a place to develop discipline, learn from one another, receive helpful feedback, and discover the joy of writing, whether they are experienced authors or just beginning.
Take 15 minutes out of your day to write something, anything — a poem, a journal entry, or a short story. Reconnect with the joy of putting words on paper.

WINE AND ALL THAT JAZZ:
SKETCHES OF SPAIN
Wednesday, November 4, 2026, 5:30-8:30pm
| | |
The 9th annual Wine and All That Jazz takes its inspiration from Miles Davis with Sketches of Spain. The theme embraces the wine, cuisine, music, and culture of Spain. In November 1959, Miles Davis' wife, Frances, insisted that he accompany her to a performance by flamenco dancer Roberto Iglesias. Inspired by the performance, Davis bought every flamenco album he could from the Colony Records shop in New York City. Working with arranger and composer Gil Evans on compositions largely derived from the Spanish folk tradition, the Grammy-winning Sketches of Spain was released in July 1960 to great acclaim as one of Davis’ most celebrated recordings.
Please join us for an Iberian excursion in support of vital programs and services for older adults in Indian Wells, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and surrounding Coachella Valley communities. Tickets are $325 and sponsorships & underwriting opportunities range from $2,500 to $25,000 with commensurate benefits.
