Baby Boomers Recognition Day is celebrated every year on August 16. We couldn’t be more thrilled to honor a generation of people who are among the largest, if not the wealthiest, in the country. Baby boomers (1946-1964), or simply ‘boomers,’ refers to the demographic born after the Silent Generation (1928-1945) and before Generation X (1965-1980). This generation, which is now between the ages of 59 and 77, represents those born during the post-World War II baby boom.

In 1946, almost three million infants were born in the United States, breaking the country’s birth record. Although the phrase has been used beyond the United States, its cultural connotations and demographic context differ. We are also well into Gen X in terms of those 50 and over as Joslyn members (1965-1973) and look forward to serving Millennials (1981-1996) and Generation Z (1997-2012) when they are of age!

The Taste of Summer Rancho Mirage is an annual community tradition that brings people together to enjoy local flavors while supporting local restaurants and helping raise funds for local nonprofits.

Many Rancho Mirage restaurants are participating by offering discounts or specials on dining. To get these great discounts, you will need to purchase a Taste of Summer wristband for $10. You may get these at the front desk at Joslyn Center or at many other local nonprofits. Proceeds from all wristbands purchased at Joslyn will stay at Joslyn and go to support the programs and services that we offer. All of this means that saving on Rancho Mirage dining will also benefit the Joslyn Center!

In 1999, Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) returns to his old high school in Richmond, California, to get the basketball team into shape. With tough rules and academic discipline, he succeeds in setting the players on a winning streak. But when their grades start to suffer, Carter locks them out of the gym and shuts down their championship season. When he is criticized by the players and their parents, he sticks to his guns, determined that they excel in class as well as on the court.
