NATIONAL JUMP FOR JELLY BEANS DAY

Thursday, July 31, 2025

National Jump for Jelly Beans Day is a U.S. holiday celebrated on July 31 every year. Not only is it a day set aside to appreciate jelly beans, it is also a day to jump for joy simply because they exist. Jelly beans have been around for more than a century in the United States and have secured themselves a position among the most consumed candies in the country. It is not only a candy confection loved by most Americans, but a candy that even a one-time president described as his favorite. And so, there’s little wonder why it’s so popular and this holiday was created in celebration.

Joslyn Center is going to celebrate the day in style with the classic "guess the number of jelly beans in the jar" contest. All week, you will find a glass candy jar filled with 49 flavors of Jelly Belly jelly beans in the lobby by the front desk. Entry cards and a contest box will be available to fill out and submit your answer. If you can't make it to Joslyn Center during the week, you can still submit an entry by clicking on the link below and providing your guess.

The winner will be the person who is closest to the actual number of jelly beans without going over. What will you win if you are the closest? The beautiful jar AND all of the Jelly Belly jelly beans, of course, GOOD LUCK! Entries will be accepted until 3:00pm on Friday, August 1st. The winner will be notified and announced, along with the correct answer, in next week's e-newsletter.

For anyone not coming into Joslyn during the week, here's some information for you:

• The jar is 4.75" high to the neck.

• The jar is 4.25" diameter.

SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

BASKETRY WITH HILLARY

Wednesdays, 10:00-11:00am

The paparazzi dropped in on Basketry with Hilary on July 27 and encountered a room full of weavers at work on their wares. The class is presented by the Braille Institute and led by Hilary Cook who cheerfully guides participants through the creative process.

Would you like to learn to weave baskets from rope and yarn? They make great gifts and are useful around the house. Each student would need to bring a skein of “blanket” yarn; crochet and knitting yarn will not work. All are welcome and low-vision seniors are encouraged. To register, please call 760-340-3220 or the Braille Institute at 760-321-1111.
