NATIONAL FARM WORKERS DAY
Monday, March 31, 2025
| | National Farm Workers Day is celebrated annually on March 31 to pay tribute to the unsung heroes on a farm who are the hired workforce doing the tougher part of the job such as plowing fields, operator tractors, spreading fertilizers, and trimming hedges. The labor force on a farm plays a pivotal role in bringing crops to fruition. Employed on low wages, they work day and night, crouching on fields under the glaring sun in all kinds of climates. Without their relentless hard work and commitment, farmers wouldn’t be able to grow, maintain, and harvest crops on such a large scale. So, on this day, we thank and glorify all farmworkers for making it possible to bring fresh produce to our tables in the face of increasing risks and challenges. | |
Our Joslyn Community Food Bank has recently started getting fresh produce from Hidden Harvest. They are a local organization that aims to reduce hunger and food waste while supporting small farmers in the Coachella Valley. They rescue fresh produce from local packing houses, or pay small farmers to grow crops, providing the much needed variety of FREE, nutritious produce to low-income seniors and families.
Our own Joslyn Gardening Club has been growing their own crops just down the street from Joslyn Center. They have four plots that they have planted and maintain. Right now, you'll see the lush fruits of their labor. The current crops consist of cherry tomatoes, rainbow chard, elephant kale, bok choy, curly kale, basil, fennel, eggplant, broccoli, zucchini, beets, carrots and green onions. These crops are primarily grown and maintained by Tahira Gindy and Henri Wilhelmi. They bring in the vegetables and herbs to Joslyn for members top enjoy when they are ready to harvest. If you would like to help out with the maintenance of the garden, they could really use help watering, especially as our temperatures start to creep up. Of course deciding on the crops to plant, planting and harvesting would be helpful as well. If you would like to lend your thumb, no matter the shade of green it is, please call the front desk and let Majesty put you in contact with Tahira.

APRIL VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB WITH BOB

| | The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese tells the story of a multi-generational Indian family living in Kerala, where a mysterious "condition" plagues them: in every generation, at least one family member dies by drowning, seemingly by fate, as they navigate life's complexities against the backdrop of changing India, with the central theme revolving around the powerful, symbolic presence of water and the family's struggle to understand and confront this inherited curse; the narrative focuses on the matriarch "Big Ammachi" and her descendants, particularly the challenges they face with love, loss, and the evolving medical landscape, as they attempt to break the cycle of tragedy tied to water. | | The Covenant of Water, by Abraham Verghese | | JOIN PALM DESERT CITIZENS ON PATROL | | JOSLYN CENTER GOLD BUSINESS PARTNERS | | The Business Partner program is one of the reasons Joslyn Center is able to keep membership dues and activities low fee or free.
