NATIONAL DRAWING DAY

Saturday, May 17, 2025

National Drawing Day is celebrated on May 17 and the best way to celebrate it is by expressing yourself through drawing just about anything you like. Did you know that drawing is an art closely tied to our history? Even cavemen who hadn’t yet learned to talk drew hunting scenes on cave walls. Today, we have so many modern tools to help us create extremely realistic and artistic drawings such as a plain sketchbook and pencil or a tablet and stylus.

Would you like to try your hand at drawing cartoons? Don is an established cartoonist and he will be sharing his skills with a Cartoon Drawing class starting Thursday, May 22. Please join in and learn the art or improve your skills. This is sure to be a fun class!

Timothy Egan’s A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan’s Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them (2023) is a historical account of the Klan’s brief but meteoric resurrection in Indiana in the 1920s. Using meticulous research combined with the descriptive elements of narrative thrillers, Egan recreates in detail a particularly dark chapter in American history. Egan focuses on David C. Stephenson, a grifter and conman who exploited the fears and racism of middle America to build an empire with himself as king, as well as Madge Oberholtzer, the woman who ultimately stopped him. Egan, a reporter for The New York Times, won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for his reporting on race in America.

"Tender Is the Night" by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of a psychiatrist, Tommy Burnham, who marries his patient, Nicole, a wealthy woman suffering from a nervous condition. The novel explores their complex relationship and how Nicole's illness and his professional dedication slowly drain his vitality, leaving him feeling unfulfilled. The story also delves into the glamorous but ultimately destructive lives of expatriates on the French Riviera during the 1920s and 30s.
