VISUALLY IMPAIRED PEOPLE DAY
Friday, June 6, 2025
|
Visually Impaired People Day is annually observed on June 6. It brings attention to people with vision impairment or loss and hopes to create supportive ecosystems for them. The day also spreads awareness about the feelings of isolation visually impaired people often struggle with and aims to help others understand and empathize with these people’s struggles.
At Joslyn Center, anyone with low to no vision is welcome. Offerings that we have that are beneficial are Tai Chi on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Basketry on Wednesdays, Orientation & Mobility on Mondays and the Peer Support Group on Wednesdays. We are all here to support anyone with any type of vision impairment.
| | Tai chi is an ancient Chinese movement practice that offers a number of health benefits. Practicing tai chi can improve balance, stability, and flexibility in older adults, including those with Parkinson’s disease. Practiced regularly, it can also help reduce pain, especially from knee osteoarthritis, back problems, and fibromyalgia. It can also reduce the risk of falls among older adults. Come down to the Center and practice the art of tai chi with instructor Mike, and low-vision seniors are encouraged to participate. | | END SENIOR HUNGER CAMPAIGN | |
It's the time of year when Joslyn Center reaches out to our friends and donors to support nutrition service programs for older adults at risk for food insecurity. These programs include the Joslyn Community Food Bank, Morning Bites and other programs throughout the year for our members. Your donation helps ensure that we can continue to fight hunger right here in the Coachella Valley.
The campaign annually takes place at the end of season and helps support these critical services in our community during the hottest months of the year. Please consider a donation of any amount and click below to contribute.

| | THIS WEEK'S ACTIVITIES AND HIGHLIGHTS | | Are you tech-savvy and want to share your knowledge with Joslyn members who need some assistance? Do you know someone who would like to volunteer to work with seniors at least one day per week to teach them technology? Get Tech is very popular since it is 1-on-1 assistance and the limited appointments fill up fast. We are looking for others who want to be on the Get Tech team and increase the availability of this service that we provide. If you would like to volunteer or know someone else who would, please contact Alex at 760-895-4652 or AlexG@JoslynCenter.org. | |

| | Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of a psychiatrist, Dr. Richard "Dick" Diver, who marries his patient, Nicole, a wealthy woman suffering from a nervous condition. The novel explores their complex relationship and how Nicole's illness and his professional dedication slowly drain his vitality, leaving him feeling unfulfilled. The story mirrors events in the lives of the author and his wife Zelda Fitzgerald as Dick starts his descent into alcoholism and Nicole struggles with mental illness. The story also delves into the glamorous but ultimately destructive lives of expatriates on the French Riviera during the 1920s & '30s. | |
