Arguably one of the greatest holidays of all time, National Sugar Cookie Day falls on July 9 each year and provides us with the perfect excuse to indulge in our guiltiest, sugar-filled cravings. They’re fun, they’re classic, but most importantly, they taste unbelievably delicious. Originating back in the 1700’s in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, sugar cookies were initially referred to as Nazareth Cookies by German Protestant settlers and baked in the shape of a keystone, their state’s symbol. Fast forward a couple hundred years later and traditional sugar cookies are now a treasured staple amid most households. Though they are outwardly simple, sugar cookies are a popular treat frequently consumed on numerous different occasions, including Valentine’s Day, Easter, Christmas, and birthdays. There are ample ways to celebrate this holiday — but really, do we need a reason to celebrate sugar cookies?

Of course we don't need a reason! But since we're discussing it, celebrate National Sugar Cookie Day by coming by Joslyn Center on Tuesday, July 9th for some freshly-made sugar cookies, personally made by our very own cookie elves. Pick up 1 (or 2) while they last.

Joslyn Center’s annual 4th of July BBQ luncheon took place on Tuesday, July 1st with a sold-out crowd of 80 guests. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and hot dogs were hot off the grill with potato salad and watermelon on the side. Joslyn’s own Tomm Belanich whipped up the patriotic brownie’s served with ice cream for all to enjoy. A raffle added to the fun with nine guests walking away with prizes.

Thank you also to Edel Cruz and Make It Royal for the in-kind donation of the photo booth experience and to the Quilters Club for the centerpiece placemats. The event was aided and abetted by volunteers Julie Sarmiento and Christopher Harris from Bilhartz Desert Insurance, and Julie’s husband, Greg, working the grill, and Ruby and Joaquin assisting with food service.

When Coast Guard Adm. Frank Beardsley (Dennis Quaid) decides to move his family of eight children back to his old hometown, he encounters handbag designer Helen North (Rene Russo), an old flame from high school. Immediately, sparks fly between the two, and marriage is proposed. But Frank isn't the only one with kids to worry about -- Helen has a total of ten.
