NATIONAL HEAT AWARENESS DAY

Friday, May 30, 2025

National Heat Awareness Day is observed annually on the last Friday of May, which falls on May 30 this year. National Heat Awareness Day is an effort by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Weather Service to alert workers, employers, and the public at large about the (preventable) health dangers related to heat, in order to reduce the overall rate of illnesses and deaths caused by it. This day was specially founded as a reminder that many outdoor workers or laborers are at risk of serious heat-induced conditions like heat exhaustion, dehydration, heatstroke, and even death. We bring you tips on how spreading awareness about these conditions and their prevention can help mitigate such unnecessary medical emergencies.

Joslyn Center plays its part as a Cooling Center each season from June through October in partnership with Joslyn Business Partner, SoCal Edison (SCE), and Action Community Partnership. Seniors over 55 years of age can join us Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm to beat the heat AND lower their utility bills by raising their thermostat when not at home. Another consideration would be to enroll in SCE's Budget Billing Plan that allows customers to split the cost of energy use into 11 equal payments throughout the year. END SENIOR HUNGER CAMPAIGN

It's the time of year when Joslyn Center reaches out to our friends and donors to support nutrition service programs for older adults at risk for food insecurity. These programs include the Joslyn Community Food Bank, Morning Bites and other programs throughout the year for our members. Your donation helps ensure that we can continue to fight hunger right here in the Coachella Valley.

The campaign annually takes place at the end of season and helps support these critical services in our community during the hottest months of the year. Please consider a donation of any amount and click below to contribute.

"Tender Is the Night" by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of a psychiatrist, Tommy Burnham, who marries his patient, Nicole, a wealthy woman suffering from a nervous condition. The novel explores their complex relationship and how Nicole's illness and his professional dedication slowly drain his vitality, leaving him feeling unfulfilled. The story also delves into the glamorous but ultimately destructive lives of expatriates on the French Riviera during the 1920s and 30s.
