NATIONAL PATIENT ADVOCACY DAY

Tuesday, August 19, 2025

National Patient Advocacy Day is observed on August 19, and this year is no different. There is no secret that the healthcare system can get complicated and downright confusing. Hospitals and healthcare personnel are overburdened and tasked with performing jobs that inevitably take time away from patient care. Here is where patient advocates come in to offer assistance. National Patient Advocacy Day was established to raise awareness about the services available to healthcare facilities, particularly those related to Medicaid enrollment. Additionally, it assists patients with healthcare coverage issues, such as filling out eligibility and enrollment documents.

The Joslyn Center and Senior Advocates of the Desert have teamed up to help our seniors be knowledgeable and be able to navigate with services like Medicare, Social Security Disability Insurance and so on. The Joslyn Center has the pleasure to have Chris O’Hanlon Executive Director/President and founder, Senior Advocates of the Desert to come down twice a month ( 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month) and help our seniors with any questions or problems they have with their Medicare and other things.

SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

COFFEE WITH BOARD MEMBERS

Wednesday, August 13

Last Wednesday morning, our Joslyn Center Board of Directors hosted their first Coffee with Board Members. This was created to be a spirited discussion where our members could meet and chat with board members, ask questions, give feedback, make suggestions, and engage with each other. Board Members Barbara Mitchell (President), Hugo Aguas (Vice President/City of Rancho Mirage Representative), Linda Blank (City of Indian Wells Representative) and Janet Davidson (City of Palm Desert Representative) were here to represent the board.

Many members met the board members in the lobby where donuts, muffins and Starbucks coffee were provided. Several topics were discussed, such as how to become a Joslyn Board Member, Joslyn Executive Director transition, and open communication. A lot of good feedback and ideas were shared with each other. Based on input that various members had to say, we will be distributing a member survey. We will also be getting a suggestion box in the lobby where you will be able to pass on your submissions and questions to help shape Joslyn Center.

The Board will continue to do Coffee with Board Members to stay connected with the membership. Watch the newsletter and signs in the lobby for the next date. We encourage you to attend and be a part of how Joslyn functions and moves forward.
