NATIONAL SEWING MACHINE DAY

Friday, June 13, 2025

Do the names Elias Howe or Isaac Singer mean anything to you? If you’ve ever taken a Home Ec course (or even worn clothes, for that matter) they should — those two gentlemen are credited with the invention of the modern sewing machine. While the wheel, telephone, and personal computer get a lot of the glory for changing how humans live, the sewing machine is somewhat of an unsung hero. Without it, however, we’d still be squinting to thread needles and stitching together our shirts and suits by hand. Whether you want a simple set of curtains to block out the bright sun, or just aren’t satisfied by shopping off the rack, sewing machines are handy appliances that deserve accolades. Dream up some custom couture and celebrate National Sewing Machine Day this June 13.

Hello, Joslyn Community. This week, I’d like to spotlight one of our incredible programs. I know that the success of our member events depends on the support of our coworkers, members, and program participants. One group that consistently goes above and beyond is our talented Quilters.

Whether it’s creating handmade gifts for prizes or crafting beautiful decorations, the Quilters never hesitate to lend a hand. These dedicated women are always hard at work on individual or group projects, yet they still find time to support our events whenever needed. Their generosity, creativity, and willingness to help truly embody the spirit of the Joslyn Center. Please stop by on Tuesday mornings to see them in action.

On behalf of myself and the entire team at the Joslyn Center, thank you to our Quilters for all that you do and for the wonderful contributions you’ve made to our community.

With gratitude,

Alex Garcia

END SENIOR HUNGER CAMPAIGN

It is the time of year when Joslyn Center reaches out to our friends and donors to support nutrition service programs for older adults at risk for food insecurity. These programs include the Joslyn Community Food Bank, Morning Bites and other programs throughout the year for our members. Your donation helps ensure that we can continue to fight hunger right here in the Coachella Valley.

The campaign annually takes place at the end of season and helps support these critical services in our community during the hottest months of the year. Please consider a donation of any amount and click below to contribute.

THIS WEEK'S ACTIVITIES AND HIGHLIGHTS

Are you tech-savvy? Would you like to share your know-how with Joslyn members in need of assistance with phones, tablets and computers? Do you know someone who would like to volunteer their time to help older adults with newfangled technology at least one day a week?

Get Tech is a popular 1-on-1 assistance program and the limited appointments fill up fast. We are looking for others who want to join the Get Tech team and increase the availability of this service. If you would like to volunteer or know someone who would, please contact Alex at 760-895-4652 or AlexG@JoslynCenter.org.

WEDNESDAY MOVIE MATINEE

ARTHUR NEWMAN THEATRE

80 for Brady

2023, 1h 38m

The film opens in 2017, centering on four elderly best friends: Lou (Lily Tomlin), Trish (Jane Fonda), Maura (Rita Moreno), and Betty (Sally Field). They gather to watch a thrilling football game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots, the latter being their favorite team. The friends participate in a lively superstition, which they believe contributes to the Patriots’ victory, involving Betty stepping on a ladder, Trish reading a magazine, Maura sipping tea, and Lou knocking over a bowl of chips. Their rituals work, sending the Pats to the Super Bowl, where they cheer excitedly for their star quarterback, Tom Brady.

Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of a psychiatrist, Dr. Richard "Dick" Diver, who marries his patient, Nicole, a wealthy woman suffering from a nervous condition. The novel explores their complex relationship and how Nicole's illness and his professional dedication slowly drain his vitality, leaving him feeling unfulfilled. The story mirrors events in the lives of the author and his wife Zelda Fitzgerald as Dick starts his descent into alcoholism and Nicole struggles with mental illness. The story also delves into the glamorous but ultimately destructive lives of expatriates on the French Riviera during the 1920s & '30s.
