VALENTINE'S DAY

Friday, February 14, 2025

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14, and we are ready to shower our significant others with love and tokens of our affection. Unlike National Boyfriend Day, this day isn’t just for the boyfriends — anyone and everyone can be shown some love today. This day of love is celebrated in so many ways, it is always exciting to see what new traditions are included or created year after year. Whether it is elaborate engagements, intimate dinners for two, spending time with family, or the most recent variation ‘Galentine’s Day’. It is a holiday we all can enjoy!

From elementary classroom card exchanges to candy, flowers, romantic dinners, and even marriage proposals, February 14 has emerged as the second biggest “giving” day of the year after Christmas, with more than 62% of Americans celebrating Valentine’s Day. Not only do we send an estimated one billion Valentines each year, but we also buy 35 million boxes of chocolates and give 220 million roses on the holiday. Another 20% of celebrators splurge on jewelry as a gift. Altogether, we spend a whopping $20 billion annually on Valentine’s Day1. That’s some love!

Do you want some extra love from Joslyn on Valentine's Day? Come see us on Friday morning and get some tasty love. We'll have some special treats for you! Don't wait too long, the treats won't be out all day.

CV GIVING DAY

March 4, 2025

CV Giving Day brings the Coachella Valley together as one community, raising money and awareness for our local nonprofits during a 24-hour online giving challenge on March 4, 2025. It inspires people to give generously to nonprofits making our desert region stronger and creating a thriving community for all.

Early giving began February 4th, and Joslyn Center is once again seeking funds for our Outdoor Pickleball Court Campaign. Two courts are paid for at $45,000 each from two generous donors, and we are seeking to close the gap on the remaining $37,165 for the third court. No gift is too big or too small, and if your gift is large enough, we might just name the court after you!

Amsterdam, 1631: Sara de Vos becomes the first woman to be admitted as a master painter to the city’s Guild of St. Luke. Though women do not paint landscapes (they are generally restricted to indoor subjects), a wintry outdoor scene haunts Sara: She cannot shake the image of a young girl from a nearby village, standing alone beside a silver birch at dusk, staring out at a group of skaters on the frozen river below. Defying the expectations of her time, she decides to paint it.

New York City, 1957: The only known surviving work of Sara de Vos, At the Edge of a Wood, hangs in the bedroom of a wealthy Manhattan lawyer, Marty de Groot, a descendant of the original owner. It is a beautiful but comfortless landscape. The lawyer’s marriage is prominent but comfortless, too. When a struggling art history grad student, Ellie Shipley, agrees to forge the painting for a dubious art dealer, she finds herself entangled with its owner in ways no one could predict.

Sydney, 2000: Now a celebrated art historian and curator, Ellie Shipley is mounting an exhibition in her field of specialization: female painters of the Dutch Golden Age. When it becomes apparent that both the original At the Edge of a Wood and her forgery are en route to her museum, the life she has carefully constructed threatens to unravel entirely and irrevocably.

New Bremen, Minnesota, 1961. The Twins were playing their debut season, ice-cold root beers were selling out at the soda counter of Halderson’s Drugstore, and Hot Stuff comic books were a mainstay on every barbershop magazine rack. It was a time of innocence and hope for a country with a new, young president. But for thirteen-year-old Frank Drum it was a grim summer in which death visited frequently and assumed many forms. Accident. Nature. Suicide. Murder.

Frank begins the season preoccupied with the concerns of any teenage boy, but when tragedy unexpectedly strikes his family—which includes his Methodist minister father; his passionate, artistic mother; Juilliard-bound older sister; and wise-beyond-his-years kid brother—he finds himself thrust into an adult world full of secrets, lies, adultery, and betrayal, suddenly called upon to demonstrate a maturity and gumption beyond his years.

Told from Frank’s perspective forty years after that fateful summer, Ordinary Grace is a brilliantly moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him. It is an unforgettable novel about discovering the terrible price of wisdom and the enduring grace of God.
