NATIONAL MAN DAY

Sunday, February 8, 2026

International Man Day is celebrated on the Sunday before Valentine’s Day every year. On this day, men and women alike raise a toast to all the men in their lives, and this year, the celebration takes place on February 8. While Valentine’s Day is associated with romantic couples, Man Day is purely a celebration of all the men whom you love and appreciate. So, cheer and root for all the men around you today!

Every individual, man or woman, needs a shot in the arm periodically. Yes, life is tough, and a dose of praise and appreciation will not harm anyone’s confidence boost. It becomes more important for men during Valentine’s week when all their thoughts are focused on bringing a smile to their female companion’s faces.

Perhaps this is the reason why Man Day is celebrated so close to Valentine’s Day, and this special day began in 2002. Often, all the focus throughout the week centers on the woman in the relationship. At times, the man can feel a tad left out. A Man Day can train the spotlight on men to make them feel an integral part of the celebrations. So, every year, on a Sunday before Valentine’s Day, everyone appreciates and thanks all the special men in their lives.

Spare a moment to think about the important male figures in your life. Remember how they have helped you at various critical junctures. Today is the day to send them your gratitude. You may want to thank your father and brother, who have always bailed you out in sticky situations, and also your male friends for having had your back at all times. You may also want to appreciate that special colleague who has always mentored you professionally. Man Day was created to remind you to compliment all the special men in your life.

You don’t need to make any elaborate arrangements for the occasion. If your male role model is near you, drop him at work. If he’s far away, send a text or a card. Just smile when you say, “Thank you for your help. I value it,” and see the other person melt.

We truly appreciate all of the men here at Joslyn. Our Joslyn Center Men's Club meets every Thursday. They discussed a wide range of topics and create new friendships. Each month feature an outing to a local restaurant, in addition to the general meetings at Joslyn. Occasional trips to museums or Firebirds games also get planned. Our Men's Prostate Cancer Support Group meets on Wednesday afternoons. If you are going through Prostate Cancer, this group would benefit you to attend. The group is led by our Wellness Center Counselor, Dennis Ritchie. This support group brings together men who are going through or have gone through the same experience. You can share personal stories, talk about feelings and concerns and share coping approaches. Talking about other helpful information you and others have learned through having related diseases, treatments or experiences will be greatly beneficial.

The Pull of the Stars is a 2020 historical fiction novel by Emma Donoghue. It is set in a Dublin maternity ward during the 1918 influenza pandemic, focusing on a nurse, a doctor, and a volunteer over three intense days as they navigate the crisis, loss, and unexpected connections. The story follows Nurse Julia Power, the rebellious Dr. Kathleen Lynn, and young volunteer Bridie Sweeney as they work in a quarantined ward, dealing with the overwhelming illness and the backdrop of war. The novel is praised for its humanity, historical detail, and its timely themes of care and survival, and it was published earlier than planned due to its relevance to the COVID-19 pandemic.
